Garage door opener repair in Ottawa, LiftMaster, Chamberlain and Genie
Garage door opener repair in Ottawa starts from $185 and covers LiftMaster, Chamberlain and Genie. Opener dead, grinding, or the door reverses every time? We fix LiftMaster, Chamberlain and Genie openers the same day across Ottawa. Repair from $185, a new opener from $595 installed, every brand on the truck.

Opener not working? Here is the fast fix
Most dead openers come down to one of four faults: a stripped drive gear, a failed motor capacitor, a dead logic board, or blocked safety sensors. We diagnose the exact cause on site and fix it the same day, repair from $185. If you want the plain-English version first, here is what the garage door opener and its trolley do.
Before you call, try the manual release and lift the door by hand. If it is heavy or will not move, the problem is not the opener at all. A dead-feeling opener is often a snapped spring repair. If the door lifts smoothly by hand but the motor will not run it, the fault is inside the opener and we will be out the same day, usually within hours.
Why won't my garage door opener work?
Openers fail in predictable ways. The sound the motor makes tells you a lot: a hum points to the motor, a grind points to the gears, a few inches of travel points to the limits or sensors, and total silence points to power or the board.
Here are the four faults we see most often on Ottawa openers, and what each one usually means.
Opener hums but the door won't move
A steady hum with no movement is almost always a blown motor capacitor or a stripped drive gear. The motor gets power but cannot turn the trolley, so it sits and buzzes. This is a common, affordable repair from $185.
The capacitor is the part that gives the motor its starting torque, and it weakens with age and cold. The drive gear is a nylon part that meshes with a worm gear inside the head. We replace either one with a gear-and-belt repair kit, and the opener runs like new.
Opener grinds or clicks
A grinding noise while the trolley stays put is a stripped drive gear, the single most common LiftMaster and Chamberlain failure. A single click with no movement is the same gear, or a broken spring loading the motor past its limit.
Stop running the opener once you hear grinding, because each cycle chews the gear further and can overheat the motor. The fix is a drive gear and sprocket kit, a $185 to $220 job depending on the brand, done on the first visit.
Door opens a few inches then reverses
A door that lifts a few inches then drops, or starts to close then reverses, is a travel and force limit problem or a sensor problem. The opener thinks it has hit an obstruction and backs off to protect you.
If it reverses on the way down, the photo-eye safety sensors near the floor are misaligned or dirty, which we cover under photo-eye sensor repair and alignment. If it stalls on the way up, the force limit is set too low or a roller is binding in the track. We reset the limits and clear the cause in one visit.
Opener is completely dead
No lights, no hum, no response from the wall console means a power problem or a failed logic board. Check that the outlet has power and the breaker has not tripped first. If power is fine, the circuit board has likely failed.
Logic boards die from power surges and from age, and on units over 12 years old a new board can cost nearly as much as a new opener. If only the remote is dead but the wall button still works, that is a quick garage door remote and keypad reprogramming, not a board failure.
Which opener brands do you repair?
Every major brand, and we carry the common parts on the truck. LiftMaster, Chamberlain, Genie, Craftsman, Linear, Marantec and older Wayne Dalton openers are all routine for us, so most repairs are a single same-day visit.
Knowing the brand and model helps us bring the right gear kit, capacitor, sensors and rail parts. If you are unsure what you have, the logo is usually on the back of the motor head or the wall console.
LiftMaster and Chamberlain
LiftMaster and Chamberlain are the same company and share parts, so a stripped gear or capacitor on either is a stock repair for us. We service belt, chain and screw drive models, plus their myQ Wi-Fi controllers.
These are the openers we install most often when a unit is beyond repair, because the LiftMaster line is built for the cold and rated for high cycle counts. We can also add or troubleshoot myQ so you control the door from your phone. For brand-specific faults and blink codes, see our dedicated guides to LiftMaster opener repair and Chamberlain opener repair.
Genie and older brands
Genie openers use a different rail and trolley design, and we carry their carriage and gear parts too. Older Craftsman, Linear, Marantec and Wayne Dalton units are all repairable while parts are still available, which for most is many years. See our Genie opener repair guide for Ottawa for Safe-T-Beam and Intellicode faults.
If a discontinued opener finally fails and parts are gone, we will tell you honestly and quote a replacement instead of selling you a repair that will not last. See the brands we service across Ottawa for the full list.
How much does garage door opener repair cost in Ottawa?
Opener repair starts from $185, which covers most gear, capacitor and sensor faults, with no overtime fees and the service call free on repairs over $250. A complete new opener installed starts from $595.

Should I repair or replace my garage door opener?
Repair if the opener is under 10 years old and the fault is a single part. Replace if it is over 12 years old, the motor is burnt out, or the logic board has died, because a new LiftMaster from $595 is the better value.

We never push a replacement you do not need, but we also will not patch a worn-out opener twice.
When repair makes sense
A newer opener with a stripped gear, a weak capacitor, a misaligned sensor or a dead remote is worth fixing. These are inexpensive parts on a unit that still has years of life left, and repair from $185 beats replacing a good motor.
A well-maintained LiftMaster or Genie can run 15 years or more, so a one-part repair on a 6-year-old opener is an easy call.
When a new LiftMaster install is the better value
When the motor is burnt out, the board is dead, or the opener is over 12 years old, repairs stop paying off. A new LiftMaster from $595 installed is quieter, has battery backup, and includes myQ Wi-Fi and the current safety sensors.
A new opener also resets your maintenance clock and comes with our 90-day guarantee on the install, so you are not chasing the next failure on an aging unit.
Belt drive vs chain drive vs screw drive openers
Belt drive openers are the quietest and best for garages under a bedroom. Chain drive units are durable and cheaper but louder. Screw drive openers have fewer parts but run rough in cold Ottawa winters, so we rarely recommend them here.
For most Ottawa homes we install a belt drive LiftMaster, because the rubber belt stays quiet and handles cold far better than a metal screw rail. If your garage is detached and noise is not an issue, a chain drive is a solid budget choice. Either way, we repair all three drive types.
Why do openers fail in cold Ottawa winters?
Cold thickens the grease, stiffens the rollers, and makes the door heavier, so the opener strains harder on the coldest mornings. A weak capacitor that coped in summer finally gives out, and a tired drive gear strips under the extra load.
Cold also makes springs brittle, and a snapped spring loads the opener far beyond its design, which then trips the force limit or burns the motor. An annual tune-up and 25-point inspection with fresh lubrication keeps the door light and the opener working. If your opener already quits in the cold, we cover the full repair service across Ottawa and Gatineau that gets you running again.
