Why won't my LiftMaster open?

A LiftMaster that will not open is usually a stripped drive gear, a blown motor capacitor, blocked safety sensors, or a broken spring. The sound tells you a lot: a hum points to the motor, a grind points to the gears, silence points to power or the board.

Before you call, pull the manual release cord and lift the door by hand. If it is heavy or will not move, the opener is not the problem. A LiftMaster that feels dead is often a broken torsion spring repair, because a snapped spring loads the motor far past its limit. If the door glides up by hand but the LiftMaster will not run it, the fault is inside the opener and we are out the same day, usually within hours. This page is the LiftMaster-specific guide to our wider garage door opener repair service in Ottawa.

What do LiftMaster blink codes mean?

A blinking LiftMaster light is a built-in fault code, and the number of flashes names the problem. Count the flashes on the motor head, and you can tell a sensor fault from a logic board fault before we even arrive.

Here is what the most common LiftMaster blink counts mean on the openers we see across Ottawa.

  • One to two flashes: a safety sensor wiring fault, often a pinched, cut or reversed wire at the photo-eye.
  • Three to four flashes: the safety sensors are out of alignment or have a blocked beam, so the door will not close.
  • Five to six flashes: a logic board or RPM sensor fault, where the opener cannot read motor speed and stops.
  • Ten flashes: a power surge has tripped the protection circuit, common after an Ottawa storm or outage.

Sensor codes are usually the cheapest fix and we cover them under photo-eye sensor repair and alignment. Board and RPM codes mean the head has to come down. For the full flash-by-flash breakdown you can read at home, see our guide to what LiftMaster blink codes mean.

My LiftMaster grinds or hums, what is wrong?

A grind is almost always a stripped nylon drive gear, the single most common LiftMaster failure. A steady hum with no movement is a blown motor capacitor. On Security+2.0 belt and chain models it can be a worn worm gear. All three are a stock same-day repair.

The drive gear is a nylon part that meshes with a steel worm gear inside the head, and it strips when a door binds, a spring weakens, or the opener simply ages. Stop running the LiftMaster the moment you hear grinding, because every cycle chews the gear further and can overheat the motor. A gear and sprocket kit is a $185 to $220 repair done on the first visit.

A capacitor is the part that gives the motor its starting torque, and it fades with age and cold, which is why a LiftMaster that hummed through summer finally quits on a minus 25 C Ottawa morning. If the door also feels heavy by hand, the real load is a tired spring, and replacing the gear without fixing the spring just strips it again.

Should I repair or replace my LiftMaster?

Repair a LiftMaster under 10 years old with a single-part fault like a gear, capacitor or sensor. Replace one over 12 years old, with a burnt motor or a dead logic board, because a new LiftMaster from $595 installed is the better value.

A well-kept LiftMaster runs 15 years or more, so a one-part repair on a 6-year-old opener is an easy call and beats replacing a good motor. We never push a replacement you do not need, and we will not patch a worn-out unit twice. A logic board on an older model can cost nearly as much as a new opener, which is where replacement wins.

A new LiftMaster is quieter, adds battery backup, and includes myQ Wi-Fi and current safety sensors, and it resets your maintenance clock. If you want the side-by-side math, our repair vs replace an opener breakdown lays it out, and every install carries our Done-Right Guarantee, 90 days.

Do you fix myQ and Wi-Fi LiftMaster models?

Yes. We service every myQ and Wi-Fi LiftMaster model, set up the app, and fix connection drops and offline errors. If the opener hardware is sound and only myQ is failing, the cause is almost always your network or the gateway, which we sort out on site.

myQ links your LiftMaster to your phone so you can open, close and check the door from anywhere, and it is built into most current models. When it drops offline it is rarely the opener, it is a weak garage Wi-Fi signal, a router change, or a firmware glitch. We can add a Wi-Fi extender, re-pair the gateway, or update the unit. For new setups, see our smart myQ opener install page, and if the app keeps disconnecting, our guide to fixing a myQ that will not connect or shows offline walks through it step by step.

How much does LiftMaster repair cost in Ottawa?

LiftMaster repair starts from $185, which covers most gear, capacitor, sensor and remote faults, with no overtime fees and the service call free on repairs over $250. A complete new LiftMaster installed starts from $595.

The service call alone is $35 to $85, and it is waived when we do a repair over $250. We quote the full price before we start, never after. A stripped gear or capacitor runs $185 to $220, a sensor or wiring fix is usually less, and a dead logic board is where replacement often makes more sense. My LiftMaster remote or keypad stopped working

A LiftMaster that responds to the wall button but not the remote or keypad is a programming or battery issue, not a motor fault. Reprogramming the remote or replacing the keypad battery usually restores it in minutes, no head repair needed.

LiftMaster remotes use Security+ rolling codes, so after a power surge or a battery change they sometimes need re-pairing to the Learn button on the motor head. If the wall console is dead too, then it is a wiring or board issue. We handle remote and keypad faults under garage door remote and keypad reprogramming, and we carry common LiftMaster remotes and keypads on the truck.

How do you stop a LiftMaster failing again?

Keep the door in balance, because an opener almost never dies of its own accord. It dies lifting a door the springs have stopped carrying.

A LiftMaster is sized to move a balanced door, not to lift its full weight. When a spring goes tired the motor takes up the difference on every cycle, and the drive gear, the capacitor or the logic board is what finally gives out. That is why a dead opener and a worn spring so often turn up in the same visit. Once a year, disconnect the opener with the red cord and lift the door by hand: it should stay put at waist height. If it drops or rises, the springs need adjusting before the opener pays for it. Run the two-minute balance test, keep the rail and rollers lubricated, and book a tune-up before the first hard freeze.
