LiftMaster Beeping? How to Replace the Backup Battery

A LiftMaster that chirps every 30 to 60 seconds is telling you the backup battery is dead. Replace the 485LM-style 12V battery in the motor head. The opener still runs on house power until you do.
Do this, in order

Unplug the opener and confirm the door is closed
Lower the garage door fully, then unplug the opener from the ceiling outlet. Working with the door down and the power off keeps the door from moving while your hands are inside the motor head.

Open the battery compartment
Find the battery door on the side or back of the LiftMaster motor head. On most belt and chain drive units it is a panel held by one or two screws, or a clip you press to release the cover.

Disconnect and remove the dead battery
Note which wire goes where, then unplug the red and black battery leads. Lift out the old 12V backup battery. It is sealed lead-acid, about the size of a small brick, so support its weight as it comes free.

Install the new 485LM-style battery
Seat the new battery in the same orientation, then connect the leads to matching terminals, red to red and black to black. The plug is keyed, so it only fits the correct way. Do not force it.

Close the compartment and plug back in
Refit the battery cover and screws, plug the opener back into the ceiling outlet, and let it charge. A new battery can take up to 24 hours to reach a full charge.

Clear the alert and test
The beeping should stop once the opener sees a healthy battery. Run one open and close cycle on house power, then unplug briefly to confirm the door still moves on battery backup.

How to replace the backup battery
Replacing a LiftMaster backup battery is a 10-minute job with one screwdriver. Unplug the opener, open the battery door on the motor head, unplug the dead 485LM, drop in the matching 12V battery red to red and black to black, then plug the opener back in and let it charge.
