Garage Door Calculators and Tools
ByHUSH Garage Door Service· Published
These 10 free garage door tools each answer one question before you call, from what a spring job costs to what a blinking opener light means, with no sign-up.

Get a starting price and check your street
Price a spring, roller, opener or new door job before you call, from $100 for a roller set, then check that we reach your postal code.
- Garage door price calculator adds our starting prices for springs, rollers, openers and new doors into one before-tax total.
- Service area checker reads a postal code or neighbourhood and says whether we serve your address, with our hours, 7am to 9pm daily.

A Best-tier double door, meaning a custom size, full-view glass or a designer facade, has no starting price. Pick one and the calculator shows “priced on your measure” instead of a number. Totals are before HST in Ontario, and Gatineau jobs are quoted with GST and QST.
Size an opening and compare door insulation
Measure the opening with the door closed and the size calculator gives the rough opening, which is the framed hole the door fills, and the headroom for doors from 8 x 7 up to 18 x 7.
- Garage door size and headroom calculator adds the side room and backroom a track needs.
- Prehung entry door rough opening tool frames a 28 to 36 inch door, a pair or sidelites, and prints a door swing chart.
- Garage door R-value comparison shows how much less heat an insulated door lets through over an Ottawa heating season.
R-value is a door’s resistance to heat flow, and a higher number keeps more heat in. That comparison runs on heating degree-days for the Ottawa airport, the season’s total of how far each day’s average temperature falls below 18 C, taken from Environment and Climate Change Canada normals. So its kWh figures describe a heated garage in this climate, not a national average.
Check spring wear and name the parts
Enter how often the door runs each day and the year the springs went in, and the spring calculator estimates the years left on a 10,000 to 50,000 cycle rating, all without touching the door.
- Spring cycle life calculator counts the cycles your springs have used against the maker’s rating. It never gives a spring size or a winding count.
- Interactive garage door parts diagram names 15 parts and shows what each does, how it fails and where we repair it.
A cycle is one open plus one close. Out to work and back is 2 a day. A spring result is a count against the maker’s rating, so treat it as a warning date, never as a promise that the spring will hold until then.
Pick an opener, match a remote and read a blink code
Count the flashes before the pause and the error code finder names the fault and says whether the opener is safe to keep using.
- Garage door opener picker suggests a belt, chain or wall-mount drive and a horsepower band from the LiftMaster product line, installed from $595.
- Remote and keypad finder reads your opener brand and Learn button colour and lists the remotes and keypads that work with it.
- Opener blink and error code finder turns a flash count, a Genie light pattern or a myQ error number into the fault name.
A “stop using it” verdict means what it says. Running the motor against that fault burns it out.
What to have ready before you open a tool
You need a tape measure, your address and your paperwork, nothing more. No tool asks you to touch a spring, a cable or a moving door.
| Tool | You enter | Where you find it |
|---|---|---|
| Price calculator | The jobs you want priced | Count the springs above the closed door by looking only |
| Service area checker | A postal code or neighbourhood | Your address |
| Size and headroom calculator | Door size, then headroom, side room and backroom if you want a track verdict | A tape measure, in inches, with the door closed |
| Entry door rough opening tool | Door width from 28 to 36 inches, height of 80 or 96 inches, a pair or sidelites | The slab size on the door you plan to buy |
| R-value comparison | Door size and two door types | Your door paperwork or the maker's label |
| Spring life calculator | Cycles a day, the year the springs went in, the rating and one or two springs | An old invoice, or the year the door went in. Pick 10,000 if the rating is unknown |
| Parts diagram | A tap on any part | Nothing to measure |
| Opener picker | 6 answers about the door, headroom, springs, a room above, myQ and battery backup | Headroom from the top of the door, at its highest point while opening, to the ceiling |
| Remote and keypad finder | Opener brand and Learn button colour | The Learn button on the opener's motor head |
| Error code finder | Brand, then the flash count, light pattern or myQ error number | Count the flashes before the pause |
Start with the problem finder when the door stops working
Pick 1 of 10 symptoms in our garage door problem finder and it names the likely cause. Spring, cable, off-track and stuck-open paths open with the safety rule.
Pull the manual release only on a fully closed door. Never pull it on an open, stalled or off-track door. Never touch a broken spring or a loose cable.
A door hanging crooked in its tracks is past what any calculator answers. Leave it where it stopped and call (343) 700-1077.
We confirm any tool result on site before work starts. HUSH is owner-operated by Omar, licensed and insured, and a Garaga dealer, and each repair carries our 90-day Done-Right guarantee.
Where the tool numbers come from
Our own price list, the door makers’ charts and Environment and Climate Change Canada climate normals supply the numbers.
Sizing figures come from Garaga, Clopay, Masonite and Therma-Tru, and each tool page names the chart behind its answer.
