Garage Door Parts Explained: What Each One Does

A garage door runs on 6 part groups: springs, cables and drums, rollers and tracks, the opener and trolley, safety sensors, and seals and panels. The springs carry the weight. The opener only starts the door moving.
What are the main parts of a garage door?
A garage door has two systems: the door and its counterbalance, and the opener that automates it. The counterbalance, the springs, cables, drums and brackets, carries the weight. The rollers, hinges and tracks guide the door. The opener, trolley and safety sensors handle the automation. When something fails, it is almost always one named part, which is why describing the symptom helps us bring the right one.

What do garage door springs do?
A standard garage door spring is rated for about 10,000 cycles, the common baseline rating in the trade, or roughly 7 years at 4 cycles a day. The springs carry the whole weight of the door. The opener does not. A torsion spring sits on a steel bar above the door and winds up as the door closes. Extension springs run along the tracks and stretch instead. Either way, the difference between torsion and extension springs is mostly where they sit and how they store the force.
A standard spring is rated for about 10,000 cycles, roughly seven years, and it is the first part to wear out. A snapped spring is the most common failure we see, and because the door then hangs on the opener and cables alone, it is unsafe to operate. Springs are wound under high tension and are never a do-it-yourself part, so broken spring repair always means calling a technician with winding bars.
How do the cables and drums lift the door?
The 2 lift cables connect the bottom of the door to the cable drums on the spring shaft. As the springs turn that shaft, the drums wind the cables and raise the door. The bottom bracket is the fitting that anchors each cable to the bottom corner of the door.
When a cable frays or jumps off its drum, the door goes crooked and can drop or bind, which is why a snapped cable and an off-track door so often happen together. The bottom bracket is under the full spring tension whenever the door is down, so it, the cables and the drums are all high-tension parts that are dangerous to adjust. How do the rollers, hinges and tracks guide the door?
The rollers are the small wheels on each panel edge, and they ride inside the tracks. The hinges connect the panels and let the door bend as it curves to the ceiling. The tracks are the steel rails. Together these 3 parts decide whether a door runs quiet or noisy.
Nylon rollers run quieter and longer than the builder-grade steel ones, and worn rollers or dry hinges are the usual reason for a rumbling, grinding door. A bent track or a loose hinge can let a roller jump the rail, so if the door is catching, leaning, or the rollers are popping out, treat it as an off-track risk. Worn hinges also crack at the holes over time and may need hinge repair.
What does the garage door opener and its trolley do?
The opener is the motor unit on the ceiling, and despite its size it only provides the small nudge needed to start a balanced door moving. The trolley, or carriage, is the part that travels along the rail and pulls the door open and shut, driven by a belt, chain or screw. Inside the opener, a logic board and travel limits tell it how far to move and when to stop.
Because the opener does so little of the lifting, a door that is hard for it to move usually has a spring or balance problem, not an opener problem. Genuine opener faults are a different story. A stripped drive gear, a dead capacitor, a failed logic board, or a unit that hums without moving all fall under garage door opener repair.
Why does a garage door need safety sensors?
The photo-eye sensors are the two small units mounted a few inches off the floor on each side of the opening. They shine an invisible beam across the door, and if anything breaks the beam while the door is closing, the opener reverses. U.S. federal law and the UL 325 standard have required them on new openers since 1993, and every major brand sold in Ottawa builds to that standard.
A blinking opener light and a door that will not close is almost always a sensor that is out of alignment or dirty, not a broken motor. What do the weather seals and panels on a garage door do?
The bottom seal is the rubber strip along the base of the door. Perimeter stop seals run up the sides and across the top, closing the gaps to the frame. Together they keep out cold air, water and pests, and a worn one is a quick weather seal replacement.
The panels, or sections, are the horizontal slabs that make up the door, and on wide doors a strut is a horizontal brace added across a panel to stop it sagging or flexing. A dented or cracked section is often swapped on its own with a panel replacement rather than a whole new door.
How well those panels hold heat comes down to their insulation, which is measured as the door R-value and matters a great deal on an attached Ottawa garage.
