Photo-eye fault assessment
Garage door safety sensor repair and alignment in Ottawa
A closing fault or blinking light points to the photo-eye sensors, their wiring or another part of the door system. HUSH checks the opener model and symptoms before recommending alignment, repair or replacement across Ottawa and Gatineau.

Door will not close and the light blinks? Here is why
Photo-eye sensors monitor a beam across the door opening. A blocked beam, alignment problem or wiring fault can affect closing, but reversal or a blinking light alone does not identify the cause. Keep clear of a damaged, crooked or resisting door and stop using the opener.
Note whether the door starts closing, stops at the same point or fails to respond. Record the opener model and the lights on each sensor and on the opener itself. The parts guide helps identify the components. Those observations help prepare for assessment without assuming a particular part has failed.
Why won't my garage door close?
A closing problem comes from the sensor circuit, an obstruction, mechanical resistance or a control fault. HUSH checks the whole door where needed. Correcting alignment will not repair a damaged track, cable or internal opener fault.
Genie explains how its Safe-T-Beam photo-eyes detect an obstruction. The checks below describe possible issues, not a ranked diagnosis for every opener. Use the procedure for the installed system.
Sensors or brackets out of alignment
An object can knock a bracket or sensor out of position. From a safe location, look for a bent bracket, loose mounting or blocked line of sight. Follow the manufacturer’s alignment instructions for that model; do not bend tracks, move safety devices arbitrarily or treat a light colour as the only test.
A blocked or dirty photo-eye lens
Keep stored items clear of the opening and beam path. If the door is stationary and safe to approach, clean accessible lenses as the manufacturer directs. Record whether the condition changes. If the fault remains, stop repeated operation and arrange diagnosis.
A damaged sensor wire or loose connection
A damaged wire or connection can affect the sensor circuit. Report visible damage without opening the motor housing, changing terminals or bypassing the wiring. The service assessment can trace the fault and check compatible repair options through our opener repair service.
Sun glare or a failed sensor
Report whether the problem occurs only at a particular time of day. Light reaching a receiving sensor can be relevant, but that pattern is not proof the sensor has failed. Any shielding or replacement must suit the manufacturer’s instructions and preserve the intended safety function.
What do the blinking sensor lights mean?
Indicator meanings depend on the opener and sensor model. Record the colour, whether it is steady or flashing, and which device shows it. A sensor LED and an opener diagnostic light are different observations; neither supplies a universal diagnosis across brands.
Check the manual for the exact system before interpreting the display. Chamberlain Group’s diagnostic-code guidance distinguishes the applicable up/down code patterns. It should not be substituted for instructions for another product family.
Green versus red, or amber, sensor light
A colour can identify a sender, receiver, power state or a fault depending on the system. Use the installed product’s chart. Do not assume every steady LED means correct alignment, or that every red or dark light means the same repair.
How many times the opener light blinks
Record the complete pattern and where it appears, including pauses or separate up/down counts. Send the model label with that description. HUSH can then check the applicable instructions rather than selecting a replacement part from a flash count alone.
Can I just bypass the sensors?
Do not bypass, disconnect or defeat a safety sensor to make the door close. It is part of the opener’s protective system. Keep people clear and arrange repair if the required safety checks fail or the door behaves abnormally.
Restore the intended safety function using the procedure for the opener. Closing a door by overriding a fault is not a sensor repair. The technician should also complete the manufacturer’s required operation and reversal tests after the work. For other mechanical problems, use the garage door repair service.
Why do garage door sensors act up in Ottawa winters?
Snow, dirt or moisture blocks a sensor’s view or corrodes its connections. Cold-weather timing is useful to report, but it does not establish that the sensor needs replacing. Check the actual system and surrounding conditions before choosing a repair.
Tell us whether the door is frozen to the floor, running unevenly or showing other signs of resistance. Those conditions can require work beyond the sensors. Stop operating a frozen or damaged door. The moisture guide explains why a recurring water or ice problem also needs its source checked.
How much does garage door sensor repair cost in Ottawa?
Sensor work is quoted after the opener and fault are identified. The service call starts at $150, waived for a repair over $250. Prices are before HST. Ask which alignment, wiring or replacement work is included; there is no single sensor-pair price for every system.
The quote should identify the device, diagnosed problem, compatible part if needed and the checks after repair. Confirm parts availability and the appointment window before booking. The repair-price guide covers the wider service-call and quotation process.
Which garage-door sensor do you mean?
Photo-eye safety sensors watch a beam across the opening. A smart door-position or tilt sensor reports whether the door is open or closed to a compatible controller. An RPM sensor monitors motor movement inside some openers. These are different devices and are not interchangeable repairs.
Chamberlain Group explains that its myQ door sensor reports position to the hub. Its travel troubleshooting guidance describes RPM feedback from the motor. A problem with either should not be diagnosed from photo-eye alignment advice.
This page focuses on photo-eye assessment. For a motor-feedback fault, use opener diagnosis. For a smart position sensor, check the controller and sensor models through compatibility review. Give HUSH the model label and describe where the device sits before buying a replacement.
