myQ Keeps Going Offline or Won't Connect: How to Fix It

myQ goes offline for 1 of 3 reasons: the gateway lost its 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, the router changed, or the firmware stalled. Confirm a strong 2.4 GHz network, reconnect the gateway, then factory-reset the hub.

myQ only joins a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network, never 5 GHz. On the phone you are setting up with, connect to the 2.4 GHz network so the app hands the gateway the right band during pairing.

Power-cycle the gateway and router
Unplug the myQ gateway or the opener, and reboot the router. Wait 30 seconds, restore power to the router first, let it settle, then power the gateway back on so it searches for a fresh signal.

Reconnect the gateway in the myQ app
Open the myQ app, go to the device that shows offline, choose Wi-Fi settings or add device, and follow the prompts to rejoin the network. Enter the 2.4 GHz password exactly, watching for case and zeros.

Factory-reset the gateway if it still fails
Press and release the Learn button three times, or hold the black adjustment button between the arrows until the LED turns off, to put the opener into Wi-Fi setup mode. Then set the device up again from scratch in the app.

Test the door and check signal strength
Open and close the door once from the app to confirm the gateway is online. If it drops again within a day, the Wi-Fi signal at the opener is likely too weak and needs a stronger router or an extender.

Why does my myQ keep going offline?
myQ keeps going offline when the gateway loses its 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi signal, the router was changed or renamed, the firmware stalled, or the connection at the opener is too weak. The fault is almost always the network, not the opener motor itself.
A myQ gateway sits inside the opener motor head or plugs in as a separate hub, and it holds a single saved Wi-Fi connection. Anything that breaks that connection drops the device to offline in the app. The four most common triggers in Ottawa homes are a weak signal reaching the garage ceiling, a new or replaced router, a swapped Wi-Fi password, and a firmware hiccup that a reboot clears. Check whether the myQ gateway is on 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz
myQ only connects to the 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi band, never 5 GHz. If your router broadcasts both bands under one network name, the app often cannot hand the gateway the 2.4 GHz signal it needs, so setup fails or the device drops offline.
The 2.4 GHz band travels farther and pushes through walls and the floor better than 5 GHz, which matters because the gateway lives at the garage ceiling, often the weakest corner of the house for Wi-Fi. Most modern routers from Bell, Rogers, and TELUS use a single combined name for both bands by default. To set myQ up reliably, open your router settings and either split the bands into two names or temporarily turn off the 5 GHz band during pairing. On your phone, join the 2.4 GHz network before you start the myQ setup, so the app passes the correct band to the gateway.

Reconnect the myQ gateway after changing your router
A new router, a renamed network, or a changed Wi-Fi password all break the saved connection, so you must reconnect the gateway in the myQ app. The gateway has no way to learn the new network on its own. Re-pair it and re-enter the 2.4 GHz details.
This is the single most common reason a myQ that worked for a year suddenly reads offline. The internet provider swapped the modem, someone changed the Wi-Fi password, or a mesh system was added, and the gateway is still hunting for a network that no longer exists. Reconnecting takes about five minutes.
- Confirm your phone is on the 2.4 GHz network from the router.
- Open the myQ app and select the device showing offline.
- Choose Wi-Fi settings, or remove and re-add the device.
- Follow the prompts and enter the 2.4 GHz network name and password exactly, watching for capital letters, the letter O, and the number zero.
- Wait for the LED on the opener or gateway to turn solid, then run one open and close cycle from the app to confirm it is back online.

Reset the myQ gateway or Smart Hub to factory defaults
If reconnecting does not work, factory-reset the gateway to wipe the stored network and start clean. Press and release the Learn button on the motor head three times, or on models with travel-limit arrows hold the adjustment button until the LED turns off. On a myQ Smart Garage Hub, press and hold the Gear button and release it when the LED flashes blue. Then add the device again.
A factory reset clears a corrupted saved connection and a stalled pairing state, which is often what keeps a gateway stuck offline even after you re-enter the right password. The button and LED location vary by brand, so check the panel on your motor head:

After the reset, the device drops out of your myQ account, so delete the old offline entry in the app and add it back as a new device. Re-enter the 2.4 GHz network and let the gateway pull any pending firmware update, which can take a few minutes and fixes many repeat-offline cases on its own.
Still offline after a reset?
If myQ is still offline after a factory reset and a clean setup, the Wi-Fi signal reaching the opener is almost certainly too weak. Stand under the opener with your phone, run a quick speed test, and if the signal is one bar or keeps dropping, the gateway cannot hold a steady link.
The garage ceiling is the hardest place in the house to cover with Wi-Fi, especially in a detached garage or a home where the router sits two floors away. A few fixes work well:
- Move the router higher and closer to the garage, or remove obstructions between it and the opener.
- Add a Wi-Fi extender or a mesh node in the room nearest the garage, set to the 2.4 GHz band.
- Confirm no double-NAT setup from a second router is blocking the gateway.
Other repeat-offline causes worth ruling out are an outdated app, a firmware update that did not finish, and ISP outages. When the opener, not the reset, is the problem
In 1 case out of the usual set, myQ shows online and the app sends the command, but the door does nothing, reverses, or runs rough. At that point the fault is mechanical or electrical in the opener, not the Wi-Fi, and no amount of resetting the gateway will fix it.
Tell the two apart this way: if the wall button on the wall also fails to move the door, or the door moves but the safety sensors flash and stop it, the issue is the opener and its hardware, not myQ.
